About this site: Maria
Let Ted be the reporter, I’ll be the diarist. To me, it’s in the little things, it’s the moments of beauty and perfection – the images are different here, the sights, the sounds, the colors, and there are plenty of things which simply don’t seem to make sense. But let them be recorded, or at least noticed, like the carpet of little white and purple flowers that the first rain had knocked off the trees that day I just couldn’t find a rickshaw to take me home and decided to walk.

We are also starting to post in German, Auf Deutsch! See Indiens High-Tech-Liebling, Bangalore, although currently incomplete. (Rest der Übersetzung folgt später)

About this site: Ted
While Maria looks at the life from the postive side, I look at it with a jaded, jaundiced eye. Our postings will reflect our individual perspectives.

And, from me, don't expect good writing and certainly not objective pieces. All writing and even journalism has some sort of subjective slant or angle simply by the choice of adjectives, verbs and nouns used. ("The angry Iraqi crowd, urged on by a big, surly, dark skinned man wearing an Osama bin Laden t-shirt"..."Muqrin, an angry young man driven by revenge and hatred for the United States and its Arab allies.") Nothing is truly objective.

Many of the people we meet are nice, we have made some friends, and heard some great music. But, you just can't hop in your car and go someplace to get away from people and the noise. Overall we look at it as an opportunity to improve our tolerance level...well, me anyway.

Survival Tips for Living in Bangalore

1. Walk and drive as if you are invisible: Indian congeniality stops at the steering wheel.
2. Drink bottled water and don't drink the tap water no matter how native you think you are.
3. Noise is your enemy and you need to be creative to supress it because you can't defeat it.
4. Cook your own food or if you find a restaurant that doesn't wreak havoc on your stomach, go back there to eat.
5. Find a good (and real) doctor.
6. Get used to seeing child laborers.
7. Have some cash in your pocket (and your house) to deal with corruption.
8. Queues (or waiting in line, as Americans know it) are for others.

Boulders and Ruins
Located about 350 km northwest of Bangalore, Hampi is a a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with temples and ruins situated among hills and huge granite boulders. Spectacular and not to be missed - if you visit India.

Indian Music
Links to cool tunes that are outside of the mainstream Hindi pop that dominates the shelves.

Indians on India
Spring elections saw the BJP booted from power. But will that really make a difference in the a country with the world's highest murder rate, rampant corruption, major issues with water and basic infrastructure needs, in addition to soaring vehicle accident rate that isn't predicted to decrease until 2045? Read what Indians and the Indian media are saying about their country.

Discipline, Driving and Out of Bangalore

Most people get a driver but that doesn’t suit our independent style. This has created road rage, induced hilarity and even caused us to run from the cops.

Survival Tips for Living in Bangalore
Posted by Ted, 29 May 04
After 6 months of living in Bangalore, my patient, cheerful, turn-the-other-cheek wife has started realizing that many of my rants and raves have at least a modicum of truth to them.

Maria's Corner: Late April
Posted by Maria, May 04
We’re about 4 months into it, and life has returned to normal. We know our way around - at least for the most part - we know where to shop, we found a couple of good restaurants and we are starting to make some friends.

Open displays of religious activity, or the preparations for them, are frequent. I haven’t managed to keep track of the number of festivals, or their significance, since we arrived.

Bang the horn, frequently

I viewed election time as just one more noise making opportunity for soft-spoken Indians and the subject of this latest diatribe which discusses noise of all sorts.

India’s hi-tech darling, Bangalore

This post concentrates on all the things that some Westener travellers with their infatuation -- for all things Indian or Asian with their bullshit filter turned off -- don't tell you. Expect more from me in that vein as well as other posts from my sensitive side.
